Cutting Hand Tools

Cutting hand tools are a common requirement in home improvement projects. Many simple hand tools cut wood and other materials by using physical force for undertaking such tasks. A handsaw is the most frequently used tool for cutting wood, There are different kinds of handsaws to be used depending on type of job.

Cordless Driver Drill

Ripsaws, big solid hand saws with teeth are designed to cut along the grain of wood. While crosscut saws have teeth designed to make cuts perpendicular to the grain of the wood while maintaining a clean cut. Bow saws have long thin blades connected by bowed metal frames allowing it to cut through. Coping saws are small and used for detailed wood.

Cordless Driver Drill

Axes used for splitting wood are used as an alternative to chainsaws for felling trees or chopping firewood. They come in many different shapes and sizes. Some axes have only one blade, while others have blades on both sides. Small hand axes are called hatchets. A maul may also be used to chop wood and having a broader and heavier head with a sharp edge makes for a nice tool.

Hedge trimmers are a type of hand tool used to cut small branches. Looking like large pliers with two long handles they are useful for pieces of wood that can fit within their jaws. Chisels are sharp metal tools used along with a hammer to cut, split or shave wood. A chisel is basically a metal wedge that can be driven powerfully by using a hammer.

Modern cutting hand tools make it possible to cut through stone and tile. It may not be your everyday project and would require some amount of expertise. Drills, hammers and cutting tools make it quite daunting. A set of stone and tile cutting tools include coring and hammer drills, grinders, and a variety of saws.

Most wood tools have at least one bevel. This is the sloping surface coming off the edge. But it's more than just a sloping surface. It's actually a cutting angle. With the bevel supporting a specific angle, it determines how the tool can be used. Experienced people know about bevels and how they affect cutting efficiency.

The angle of your carving tool or length of the bevel determines the strength of the wood you cut. The greater the cutting angle the steeper and shorter the bevel. If you're going to cut soft woods, you'll want a small angle on your tool's edge. If you're going to cut hard woods, you'll want a large cutting angle on your tool's edge.

An important point to remember is the size of the cutting angle on the edge that determines how much control you'll have when cutting. When you know the fundamentals of how angles on beveled edges affect cutting efficiency you will learn all about any cutting tool you hold in your hand. You will thus avoid simple mistakes and become a skilled cutting tool user.

Here's How to Charge a Makita Cordless Drill

It's too easy!

Cordless Driver Drill

If you have a Makita cordless drill, your life gets much easier. Especially due to the lithium-ion batteries they come with. Makita drills are becoming popular with each passing day.

Cordless Driver Drill

That said, a Makita battery charger is an important aspect of maintaining a cordless drill.

The first thing you must remember while operating a cordless tool is to never use it when the battery level is low. Always keep the battery charged and fresh.

Always use the charger supplied with your Makita cordless drill. Using any other charger will only damage your drill battery.

Another question, which must be bugging you would be, 'how long do I charge the battery for?' Well, remember that you simply have to follow the indicators on your makita battery charger.

If it is red, lt's charged and if it's green, it's time to unplug it-Your ready to go!

Some of them have continuous light and flashing light indicators.

That said; remember the following tips while charging your cordless drill:

* Be sure that the Makita battery charger is plugged in and switched on.

* Fix the Makita battery into the charging station.

* Switch on the power supply and completely charge the battery.

* When it is first switched on check the battery charger indicator lights to ensure there are no errors. It should show either charging or already fully charged.

If you are charging the battery for the first time, charge it at least for 7-8 hours. If it has been previously charged, simply follow the charging indicators. A completely empty battery should be charged for around four to six hours. -Always go off the indicator lights though. Once charged, unplug the charging cord from the Makita cordless drill.

The device is now ready to be used.

Now, here are a few tips about maximizing the performance of your Makita battery.

A. You can prolong the battery life by completely charging and then fully discharging it, at least once a month. Exceptions to this rule are the Li-Ion batteries, which do not experience the memory effect.

B. Ensure that the contacts of your Makita cordless Drill Battery are as clean as possible as this would ensure a good charge.

C. Do not let the battery stay in a discharged state for long. Use the battery at least once a month.

D. If you don't plan on using your tool for a month or so, take out the battery and store it in a cool and dry place. Also when not in use click the rotation direction switch by the trigger to neutral. This aids in battery storage.

So, do you still feel hassled about charging your cordless Makita cordless drill? We think not.

In Review: Dewalt's DCD980L2 20V MAX Premium Drill-Driver Kit

This September 2011, Dewalt is expected to shake-up the tool industry with the release of a new 20V MAX premium drill-driver kit. Revamping their former platform of 18V tools, this drill-driver is engineered with a new emphasis on compact and efficient intelligence. Although not considerably smaller than the former 18V drill-driver, the DCD980L2 has been remolded into a compact, comfortable, and intensely powerful little machine. Fortunately for tool users, there is no good reason not to own a good drill-driver.

Cordless Driver Drill

Technically the drill still produces only 18V of output power, but this premium 20V MAX drill-driver is expected to be one of the most powerful and versatile drill-drivers on the market today. It's 3.0-Ah lithium ion battery has been entirely redesigned to produce the most efficient power possible from a seriously compact battery pack. More specifically, the battery slides on to the base of the tool rather than sliding up (with a stem) into the handle of the tool. This design adjustment enhances the well balance of the drill and allows the entire machine to be lighter weight and simpler to handle. The batteries themselves are smaller and lightweight as well and, with a few additional technological adjustments, offer a bit more run-time and greater life-long durability. So, despite the battery actually producing a little less working power than indicated in their (20V MAX) title, they certainly deliver a few benefits extra that merit the name change.

Cordless Driver Drill

Additionally, the tool itself is sleek and well balanced and offers improved ergonomics for more comfortable operation. It's body design is nicely compact and the thing maneuvers well despite rigorous work. Furthermore, the DCD980L2 boasts a three-speed all-metal transmission for overall durability, longer tool run-time and greater productivity. The strength and versatility of this transmission, allowing operators to match each application to the most appropriate speed setting, also contributes to greater overall working results and the kind of speed and accuracy achieved only with the highest-quality tools.

The drill-driver's heavy-duty 1/2" ratcheting chuck has carbide inserts to deliver optimal bit gripping strength, and the tool's high-efficiency motor (delivering a whopping 535 unit watts of max power) contributes to the tool's overall superior power and ultra high-performance. Accordingly, the tool is pretty much ideal for virtually all drilling and driving applications. The thing weighs 5.2-lbs ensuring comfortable operation despite heavy-duty applications, and with an RPM range of 0-575 / 0-1,350 and 0-2,000, the drill has the chops to impress during any number of tasks. Whether rigorous or mild, the drill is designed to make you work-load a bit easier and you tool arsenal a little more impressive.

6 Power Drill Safety Tips

A power drill is not a complicated device. But with all power tools, safety needs to be respected. Imagine having a drill bit snap and end up lodged in your eye. A simple pair of safety glasses would have prevented that and you would have kept your eye sight. So let's look at some drill safety tips.

Cordless Driver Drill

1. Don't wear long sleeves or loose clothing when drilling. Depending on the type of drill, a piece of clothing caught in the bit and wind up clothing extremely fast. Having your sleeve caught in the drill will cause extreme amounts of pain when there is no more sleeve left to get tangled.

Cordless Driver Drill

2. Using a dust mask can help prevent you from inhaling your project. Even something as simple as wood can cause pain and bleeding in your respiratory tract.

3. As a general rule, always make sure your work is clamped down securely. Having a piece of metal or wood kick out and a drill bit go in to your leg would not be a pleasant experience.

4. Don't force the drill to drill. Instead, let the machine do its job. This goes for sanding as well.

5. You should always start off very slow and work up to a higher speed. Starting off fast is only going to have the drill bit dance around and end up other than in your work.

6. And finally, take your time. The number one reasons accidents happen in the shop is from people rushing. If it takes 2 minutes to drill through a piece of sheet metal, don't try to get it done in 30 seconds.

Makita Cordless Drill Repair: How to Replace Your Armature

For many crafters and tool users replacing worn or damaged power tool parts has become as familiar as driving a screw. For many of those same crafters, though, the thought of replacing the armature in a power drill is daunting if not altogether discouraging. Fortunately though, replacing the armature in a cordless Makita drill, one of the most popular drill types on the market today, is a far simpler process than you might have thought. In fact, with just a dash of courage and a handful of generally simple steps, you can remove and replace the armature in your Makita cordless drill like a true cordless-drill-armature-replacing fool.

Cordless Driver Drill

First, as with any other cordless tool repair procedure, you must turn-off the drill and remove its battery. Next, you simply need to crack into the tool.

Cordless Driver Drill

Lay the tool down on a sturdy flat surface and remove the drill's end-cap and the top half of its clamshell or housing. The end-cap is the dome-shaped section of the housing directly opposite the chuck. top half of the clamshell or housing. Both the housing and end-cap will be held together with star-head screws, accordingly, you will require a star-head screw driver or drill bit to properly open the housing. Set the screws and the top half of the housing safely aside as you continue.

Now that all your power tool's guts and glory are exposed, you will need to remove a few pieces before gaining full access to the armature. First, release the heat sink. This is an L-shaped piece of metal attached to the switch by a series of wires that latches-down over the armature and yoke. Simply pull and place it out of the way. Next, carefully remove the tool's gear-box and brush-holder.

Take note of how these pieces are placed and positioned so that when reinstalling them, every component comes back together properly.

At this point, and because you've already got the tool cracked open, it is also a good idea to check the integrity of your brushes. These little suckers are certainly no strangers to wear and tear and it is never a bad idea to replace them where there are indications of damage. So, if your brushes look worn or crumbly, replace them before completing your repair.

Now that you have gained access to the armature, simply remove the armature and yoke, which at this point, will be connected and removed as one piece. The yoke is an open ended casing which fits over the fattest part of the armature's body. Simply pull the two apart and insert the new armature into the yoke in the same fashion the damaged armature was removed.

Next, you will simply need to move backwards through procedure. This time, however, you get to combine a few steps. In fact, you will essentially insert all components thus far removed as one singular piece. In other words, insert the yoke and armature, the gear-box, and brush-holder simultaneously.

To do this, use the armature to push the brushes into the brush-holder. Ensuring the brushes can make complete contact with the armature, simply squeeze the two together and, holding that position, square the gear-box to the armature's other side. Slide the components into the housing together ensuring they are positioned identically to their pre-removal stations. While inserting, you must also match the notch in the yoke to the plastic notch-catch that is molded into the drill housing. Matching and securing these points will ensure the armature (and surrounding components) remains in the right place inside your drill. NOTE: to match these points, the notch in the yoke will face directly away from you, or, what is now the very bottom of the drill.

Now that the armature and yoke, the gear-box and brush-holder are secured properly in place, replace the heat-sink. Next, replace the top-half of the drill housing and the end-cap. Here, be especially careful not to damage the threads of your star-head screws. This ensures that no matter how many times you need to break into your drill, those screws remain tight.

Lastly, to ensure everything has come back together properly, you simply need to test the drill. Attach the battery, engage the tool, and drill a few screws. If everything runs smoothly, then, congratulations, you have successfully replaced the armature in your Makita cordless drill. If everything doesn't run smoothly, remove the housing once more and retrace your steps ensuring each component is properly communicating with its fellows. If you can find an error, for instance, if your brushes are not making complete contact, fix it. If you can not find an error or cannot otherwise convince the tool to perform properly, take the drill to an authorized Makita service center for professional inspection.

About Makita's 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series
As one of the pioneers driving the cordless tool revolution, Makita changed the game with its breakthrough 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Series. Three years after its debut, Makita's LXT Series has grown from seven to over 35 tools, providing a wide range of cordless solutions for professional tradesmen. Makita also added 18V Compact Lithium-Ion for cordless power in a more compact size. Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries and ENERGY STAR rated Optimum Charging System provide several benefits over old battery technology. When compared to traditional 18V Ni-Cd batteries, Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have 40% less weight, longer run time, and five-times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use at any time.

Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles--2.5X more than Ni-Cd. In addition, built-in shock absorbing features help protect the battery, and sixteen firm-holding contact terminals deliver constant high power. During the charging process, a built-in memory chip in the battery communicates with the Optimum Charger for a more efficient charge, extending the battery life. Makita's Optimum Charger is also faster: it will charge an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery in just 30 minutes, and an 18V Compact Lithium-Ion battery in only 15 minutes. Makita also offers a Rapid Automotive Charger for 18V LXT and 18V Compact Lithium-Ion batteries that plugs into 12V DC sockets equipped in most automobiles and trucks for added mobility. Makita's growing line of LXT cordless tool solutions features a wide range of industrial-quality power tools, including driver-drills, impact drivers, impact wrenches, saws, grinders, screwguns, rotary hammers, and more. The LXT Series also offers a jobsite radio, rechargeable flashlights, and several different combo kits.
